Nonhuman Teachers Presents HORT/CULTURE: Ecological Storytelling
As the autumnal equinox approaches, we're thrilled to welcome some of our favorite sapiens in the galaxy: author Sophie Strand and gamelan ensemble Gamelan Kusuma Laras, to explore our intrinsic connection with celestial processes and seasonal change. Through music, dance, and the spoken word, we'll delve into how humans have made sense of the passage of time on this cosmic marble oasis we call home.
Sophie Strand is a writer based in the Hudson Valley who focuses on the intersection of spirituality, storytelling, and ecology. Give her a salamander and a stone, and she’ll write you a love story. Sophie was raised by house cats, puffballs, possums, raccoons, and an opinionated, crippled goose. In every neighborhood she’s ever lived in, she has been known as “the walker.” She believes strongly that all thinking happens interstitially – between beings, ideas, differences, mythical gradients.
Gamelan Kusuma Laras is a classical Javanese gamelan ensemble based in New York City that performs music, dance, and theatre from the classical repertoire of the courts of Central Java. Formed 30 years ago to study and present Indonesian performing arts to American audiences, the ensemble is comprised of American and Indonesian players from around the world.
