JAZZ: Michael Shekwoaga Ode

Join us in the West Room for an evening of jazz featuring Michael Shekwoaga Ode, the Nigerian American drummer, composer, vocalist, and bandleader whose expansive musical voice has taken him from Durham, North Carolina to stages around the world.

Introduced to music in church as a toddler, Ode received his first drum set at just two years old and grew up immersed in jazz ensembles, orchestra, and drum line before earning a scholarship to Oberlin Conservatory, where he studied under legendary drummer Billy Hart. Since then, he has performed and recorded alongside Kenny Garrett, Gary Bartz, Roy Hargrove, Ambrose Akinmusire, Arturo Sandoval, and Jill Scott. Now touring with Kenny Garrett while leading his own ensembles, Ode has emerged as a compelling bandleader in his own right, bringing together a deep sense of rhythm, melody, and improvisation.
