In observation of Climate Week NYC, Nine Orchard is delighted to celebrate Matthew Modine with an intimate, evening chat inside the West Room—in conversation with Natural Resources Defense Council/Rewrite The Future's Daniel Hinerfeld.

Growing up in Imperial Beach, California, Modine left the state in 1979, with a dream of making it in New York City— driving across the country in a '65 Mustang convertible with his cousin. After attending Stella Adler's Conservatory of Acting, he landed important, award-winning roles early on, with directors Robert Altman, Harold Becker, Alan Parker, Stanley Kubrick, Jonathan Demme, Christopher Nolan and beyond. Matthew was recently seen in Netflix’s Stranger Things and Zero Day, Amazon’s The Better Sister, and the Academy Award-winning film Oppenheimer.

A self-professed activist since the age of ten, he co-founded a film and new media production company, Cinco Dedos Peculias, with former Apple marketing executive Adam Rackoff. The duo have produced dozens of award-winning short films, documentaries, and animated features, most recently Accidental Truth (2023) about the UAP phenomenon, Signe Baumane’s animated feature My Love Affair With Marriage (2023), and Downwind (2023), an expose chronicling the fallout from decades of nuclear bomb testing on American soil. They are also developing Ripple Effect, an environmental docuseries that follows Modine on a quest to find what Jacques Cousteau called "wavemakers" — extraordinary people making bold attempts to save the planet before it's too late.

Daniel Hinerfeld, an Emmy-winning filmmaker and award-winning journalist, oversees Rewrite the Future, which partners with Hollywood to tell the story of climate change. He founded the NRDC's documentary unit and created films including Sonic Sea (2016), narrated by Rachel McAdams, Acid Test (2009), narrated by Sigourney Weaver, and Stories from the Gulf (2011), narrated by Robert Redford, all for Discovery. Daniel previously worked as a reporter, producer, and senior editor at NPR, and co-created the nationally syndicated political analysis show, Left, Right, and Center at KCRW.
