JAZZ: LUCÍA

Four years ago, 25-year-old singer Lucía became the first Mexican artist to compete in the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. In the final round, she sang "What a Difference a Day Makes," originally a Spanish-language bolero by María Grever, starting it as an English jazz ballad before switching to Spanish and adding zapateado dancing. "My mother told me that being able to sing in Spanish while dancing was what made me different from everyone else," she says. Lucía won, and that rendition became the opening track of her self-titled debut.

Born in Veracruz, Lucía Gutiérrez Rebolloso began performing at age two with her parents' son jarocho ensemble,surrounded by fandangos and records from El Gran Combo to Aretha Franklin. "I never had a Justin Bieber phase," she laughs. "At eight I was already obsessed with The Beatles, Nina Simone and Sarah Vaughan."

After earning a Jazz Studies degree from the University of Veracruz, she spent two years singing with Natalia Lafourcade, including at Carnegie Hall. Her debut, Lucía (La Reserve Records, 2025), features Edward Simon, Larry Grenadier, Antonio Sánchez and David Sánchez, and has taken her on tour across North America and Europe.

Her second album, Desventura Jarocha, featuring classic Latin standards, is on the way. "I wouldn't be true to myself unless I fuse my sound with my own roots," she says.
