JAZZ: The Kojo Roney Experience
For our final Jazz at Nine Orchard of the year, we welcome The Kojo Roney Experience to the West Room. Please note: this special year-end performance will not take place on our usual Tuesday night.
The Kojo Roney Experience is built around a bond few jazz groups can claim: that between a father and son. At its core are tenor saxophonist Antoine Roney and his son, drummer Kojo Roney, bringing together two generations of a family whose roots run deep in jazz.
Born in Philadelphia, Antoine grew up surrounded by music. He began on clarinet before switching to saxophone after his late older brother, renowned trumpeter Wallace Roney, introduced him to John Coltrane’s Live at Birdland. A graduate of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Antoine later studied with Jackie McLean at the Hartt School of Music. He has released five albums as a leader and performed with Donald Byrd, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, Geri Allen, Rashied Ali, Ravi Coltrane and many others.
Kojo chose a life in music from an early age, learning from his father and his mother, choreographer and movement artist Nia Love, while carrying forward a musical lineage that spans generations. He first toured Europe at age eight and has since performed around the world, sharing the stage with Wallace Roney, Ron Carter, Buster Williams, Chick Corea, Gary Bartz and Harold Mabern. His mentors have included legendary drummers Roy Haynes, Milford Graves, Louis Hayes, Al Foster, Jimmy Cobb and Cindy Blackman.
Together, father and son carry a family tradition forward, one live performance at a time.
