JAZZ: NALEDI
Nine Orchard is nearing the end of its 2024 Jazz season. Join us on Monday, November 4th, as we welcome South African artist and singer-songwriter NALEDI to the West Room.
NALEDI is making her mark on the global music scene by immersing audiences in spirited and deeply rooted performances. Her love for the arts was nurtured through backyard jam sessions and a boundless artistic curiosity. NALEDI’s voice is grounded in an exploration of jazz tradition, storytelling, and the influences of her African heritage.
Early in her career, NALEDI has already achieved numerous accolades. She holds two degrees: one in International Relations and Sociology from the University of Cape Town, and another in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. As a student, NALEDI was selected for the premier South African Standard Bank National Youth Band and earned prestigious awards, including top three placements in the International Ella Fitzgerald Vocal Competition, the National Dolo Coker Jazz Competition, and the Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition. Along the way, she has received mentorship from Dominique Eade, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Jason Moran.
NALEDI’s debut album, Batho, released earlier this year, is described by her as "both an exploration of my communities and a call to action." The record captures her vast journey over recent years. In 2018, she moved nearly 8,000 miles from South Africa to Boston to study jazz performance. As she settled into a new school and country, music became her refuge, helping her navigate homesickness and find comfort.
Doors will open at 8:00 PM, with the performance starting at 9:00 PM, followed by records spun by Stretch Armstrong.
