JAZZ: BRANDON WOODY
Since his last appearance at the Nine Orchard, Baltimore trumpeter and composer Brandon Woody has had a remarkable run. In November 2024, he signed with the legendary Blue Note Records, and in May 2025 released his label debut, For The Love Of It All, with his longtime band UPENDO, featuring pianist Troy Long, bassist Michael Saunders, and drummer Quincy Phillips.
The album drew widespread acclaim, with the Washington Post calling his music "staggeringly self-assured" and the Financial Times praising its emotional sweep "from gentle lyricism to swaggering virtuosity," while DownBeat singled out his "rich and expressive" tone. Hailed by The New York Times and Los Angeles Times as a rising force in contemporary jazz, Woody has spent the past year and a half taking UPENDO's Baltimore-rooted blend of jazz, gospel, and improvised music to various stages — including the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl. We're thrilled to welcome him back.
