Jazz: 40th Show with Miki Yamanaka
Nine Orchard Presents is approaching a milestone. May 5th will be our 40th jazz night! What started as a one-off on a rainy Monday night in 2022 has grown into one of the city’s most necessary live music events, a night - ushered by our music director Stretch Armstrong - where people of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the finest in jazz, from legends to the most exciting newcomers to the scene, in the comfort of Nine Orchard’s spacious West Room.
We want to thank all of you for creating an atmosphere that has made Nine Orchard a favorite place for musicians to perform, and we want to acknowledge the artistry and enthusiasm of the many artists who have shared their gifts with us.

About Miki Yamanaka:
Japanese-born pianist Miki Yamanaka has called New York City home since 2012, quickly establishing herself as one of the leading voices of her generation. Critics praise her “light, expressive touch and solidly crafted, mainstream approach,” while audiences delight in the frenetic way she devours the keys. She has become a fixture of the New York scene through residencies at Smalls and Mezzrow, and her popular pandemic-era livestream series, “Miki’s Mood.”
As a sideman, Yamanaka has worked with luminaries including Antonio Hart, Roger Humphries, and the Mingus Big Band. Mentor and master pianist Larry Goldings has said, “If only I could have Miki Yamanaka comp behind me!” - a compliment of the highest order from one master to another. Beyond the bandstand, Miki is known for her infectious warmth and her tradition of wearing kimonos when she performs — a proud nod to her Japanese heritage that has become her signature.
