HORT/CULTURE: Jim Nollman + David Rothenberg

Communication across the yawning chasm of speciation can take many forms – visual, aural, olfactory, physical, etc. – and the yearning for a common tongue has forever bewitched humans. Artists Jim Nollman and David Rothenberg have spent their respective careers exploring music as the primary means of bridging this gap.

Join us for an evening of interspecies discussion and performance in celebration of this noble pursuit and the forthcoming release of Nollman's career-spanning collection of recordings, titled Orcas' Greatest Hits, on Smithsonian Folkways Recordings.

Jim Nollman is a sound artist and author who has dedicated his practice to playing music with non-human individuals. He is the founder of Interspecies, a nonprofit organization active from 1979 - 2014 focused on developing wilderness programs that gave artists access to nature with the objective of creating interactive relationships with wild animals and habitat. 

David Rothenberg is Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Music at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is a Grammy Award-winning musician and composer and the author of several books, including Why Birds Sing, Whale Music, and Bug Music. His work explores the complex relationship between humanity and nature.
