DEVOTIONAL LISTENING with OJAS
Listen in, listen deeply.
Devotional Listening is a performance series for those looking to find reverence in sound. Each iteration is an inimitable experience— a moment of real-time call and response between musician, listener, and environment. Coming from an international run, the series returns to New York City for the first time in 3 years.
On Sunday April 5th, Devotional Listening arrives at Nine Orchard’s West Room to gather percussion, nylon guitar, vocals, and cello to converse with attendees through the language of music. We offer you sound as practice, as meditation, as communion. Featuring Mia Garcia on guitar, Keshava Madhava on the mridanga, Jenna Pascale on cello, and Miriam Elahajli on vocals and guitar.
Mia Garcia is a multi-media sound artist based in Southern California. Growing up with the rhythms of a Cuban and Mexican family, music became the foundation of her life. Mia’s work has been featured in LACMA, MoMA Kanagawa, on award winning film scores including Women and the Wind, as well as a global array of concert venues with her musical duo OHMA.
Keshava Madhava is a New York–based multi-instrumentalist and vocalist devoted to creating music that reconnects the self with the divine. Inspired by the classical Indian musical traditions he was born into, his work explores the depth of love—both in human relationships and in one’s connection to the sacred.
Jenna Pascale is a classically trained cellist. At the age of 6 ½ she performed at Carnegie Hall. She is currently one of two members of the amorphous, experimental, neo-classical duo KatzPascale, blending classical prowess with contemporary flair in a unique soundscape that defies genre boundaries.
Miriam Elhajli’s “nuanced work is influenced equally by her Venezuelan and Moroccan heritage, the history of traditional South American farming techniques, and her musicological research at The Association for Cultural Equity. The result is multifaceted and thoughtful with sounds that borrow from Appalachian country tunes, agitprop spoken word, Argentinian zamba, and much more.” (Lincoln Center).
